A routine traffic stop on St. Thomas escalated into a vehicle pursuit and ended with a crash and the arrest of a 22-year-old man late Friday night. Special Operations Bureau officers spotted a black Acura ILX traveling eastbound on Veterans Drive without a rear license plate around 10:22 p.m. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to stop and fled, running through multiple stop signs and red lights and narrowly avoiding collisions with other vehicles.
The chase ended when the driver lost control and crashed into a wall near a laundromat on Alton Adams Drive. A passenger, identified as K’Andre Lake, jumped from the vehicle and ran on foot but was quickly caught by pursuing officers. Lake was found carrying a firearm at the time of his arrest. He also told officers he had thrown a second weapon during the pursuit and provided its location, allowing police to recover it.
Lake faces a lengthy list of charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, possession of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, reckless endangerment, destruction of property, interfering with an officer, and simple possession of marijuana, among others. He was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections with bail set at $180,000.
