Man Extradited to St. Croix in Firearm, Ammunition Case
A 29-year-old man detained in Florida has been extradited to St. Croix to face firearm and ammunition charges, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.
Police identified the man as Jomar Sanes. VIPD said Sanes is charged with carrying a firearm openly or concealed and possession of ammunition.
The case stems from an April 26 incident in the Castle Burke neighborhood, where the 911 Emergency Call Center received several reports of shots fired at about 11:25 p.m., police said. Responding officers found Sanes with multiple gunshot wounds, and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
While Sanes was being treated, police said a firearm was found in his possession. Investigators later determined he did not have a license to possess a firearm, and an arrest warrant was obtained from Superior Court. VIPD said Sanes later left the island, and the warrant was entered into the National Crime Information Center database.
Sanes was apprehended and detained in Florida on or about June 18, police said. Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Bureau returned him to St. Croix on July 3, where he was arrested and processed.
Unable to post $50,000 bail, Sanes was remanded to the John Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending an advice-of-rights hearing scheduled for July 6 in Superior Court, according to VIPD.
