Lionsgate is aiming to begin work on Michael 2 in late 2026 or early 2027, according to comments from the studio’s motion-picture chief Adam Fogelson during the company’s Aug. 6 earnings call.

Variety reported that the studio is tentatively looking at a release near the end of 2027 or in the first half of 2028. Those dates are not locked in, and the report described the project as still being developed.

The follow-up would continue the story begun in Michael, Antoine Fuqua’s biopic starring Jaafar Jackson as his uncle Michael Jackson. The first film ends around the 1987 Bad tour, Variety reported, leaving the next chapter’s exact time period unclear.

Fogelson also said Lionsgate expects to reuse previously filmed musical material where it fits. For now, the sequel has a target window rather than a final production schedule.
