William Orbit, the British producer and musician whose studio work helped define Madonna’s Ray of Light era and Blur’s 13, has died at 69. His family said he died at home on July 23 in a statement posted to his Instagram account, according to Variety. No cause of death was given.

Orbit brought an electronic, atmospheric edge to Madonna’s 1998 Ray of Light, which won the Grammy for best pop vocal album. He also shared Grammys connected to the album’s title track and Madonna’s later single Beautiful Stranger, Variety reported.

His credits ran well beyond one pop reinvention. Orbit worked with Blur, Beth Orton, All Saints, U2, No Doubt, Britney Spears and others, while continuing to release his own records. The family asked for privacy in its statement.
