Australia bars fully AI-made songs from its official charts

Australia’s official music charts are drawing a line around fully AI-generated songs. The Australian Recording Industry Association said Monday that tracks made wholly with generative AI will not qualify for the ARIA Charts.
The change takes effect with the chart dated Aug. 31 and published Aug. 28. ARIA says a recording that uses generative AI can still be eligible if it is substantially made by people and does not raise concerns about stream or chart manipulation.
That leaves room for artists using AI as part of a recording process, while keeping fully generated releases out of the chart race. ARIA said it will use definitions tied to an international music-industry labeling standard announced in July to sort AI-assisted work from AI-generated work.
ARIA can refuse a recording for survey, remove an ineligible song, revise chart positions and withdraw related certifications. Artists and representatives can challenge an exclusion through the updated code’s disputes process, according to ARIA’s announcement. The decision comes as chart systems and streaming platforms face a practical question: where does a music tool end and a synthetic act begin?
