St. Thomas Woman Arrested in Fatal Veterans Drive Collision

A St. Thomas woman was arrested Wednesday after a hit-and-run collision on Veterans Drive left one pedestrian dead and another with life-threatening injuries, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.
VIPD said the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report at 5:59 p.m. June 17 that pedestrians had been struck by a gold Honda CRV that left the scene and headed toward Barbel Plaza.
Preliminary findings by the Traffic Investigation Bureau identified the driver as Michelle Donastorg. Police said Donastorg was traveling east on Veterans Drive when she struck a vehicle near the Legislature, fled the area, then drove onto the sidewalk and struck two female pedestrians.
The two pedestrians were taken to Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. One was treated for life-threatening injuries, while Tanny Harman, 49, died from her injuries, VIPD said.
Officers said Donastorg appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when they made contact with her after her vehicle was blocked by three vehicles near an intersection.
Donastorg, 55, was arrested on charges including vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a collision with injuries, third-degree assault and manslaughter. Police said she was unable to post $97,000 bail and was turned over to the Bureau of Corrections.
